VIETNAM

by an Unknown Soldier Fighting in the Vietnam War

Of this poem, Shaver explained: "Viet Nam sent me by a stfan of old standing. I don't even know if he lived thru the shooting"

Let the Remembering eye

Be beautiful

Remembering Viet Nam

Of handsome small brown

People in flat cone hats

And little villages

Of many flowers and many gardens

And such talk and laughter

And the secret jungle

Brooding in the background

Remembering an age of beauty

Remember

The

Round

Square

Oblong

Table

Talking

Peace

Talking

Peace but

None

Came

Munitioners

Profit

Greedily

Let the remembering eye

Be ugly

And dead as Viet Nam

Is dead

With wandering homeless

Plodding and terrified

Ah, the conquering heros

Come to nowhere

One wants to be

What WAS Viet Nam?

No home forever

Viet Nam no
